Role of the Trustees The role of Trustee is one that was established to maintain continuity of the values and integrity of NIGM. Trustees are chosen by The National Golf Foundation and the Continuing Education Department at Oglebay Resort for the National Institute of Golf Management. No more than four persons serve as Trustees and they are chosen from former Chairs of the Board of Regents who have shown exceptional commitment and dedication to the Institute. They serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Regents and provide a historical perspective to the Board’s deliberations. Trustees have no terms and serve as long as they are willing.
Scholarships
Thomas Hines Tuition Grants Following his retirement as a professor and department head in parks and recreation at North Carolina State University, Tom Hines became the Dean of all of the schools hosted at Oglebay. As an educator, Tom saw the need to train professional managers for the golf industry and founded the National Institute of Golf Management. The tuition grant program was established in his honor and students meeting the criteria can apply via a brief application form found on this web site. The Thomas Hines Tuition Grants are funded by monies raised at NIGM’s annual “Fun Night” and cover the cost of full tuition for deserving students that are selected from among the applicants and/or recommended by Institute faculty.
Angelo Palermo Scholarship
Angelo Palermo was an accomplished park and recreation administrator who, upon his retirement, worked for the National Golf Foundation conducting feasibility studies and management audits. He was a member of the original Board of Regents of NIGM and was devoted to the success of the Institute. Upon his untimely death, the National Golf Foundation and Oglebay chose to commemorate Angelo’s memory through the establishment of a scholarship in his name, that provides both tuition as well as room and board for a deserving person, selected by the National Golf Foundation.
Club Car Scholarship
The Club Car Scholarship provides tuition in addition to room and board to a deserving candidate chosen by Institute Trustees. The scholarship is provided through the generosity of Club Car, a long-time sponsor of NIGM.
Other Scholarships
Other scholarships are made available from time to time by individuals. For example, there is currently a scholarship available for graduates of NIGM’s two- year Institute to attend the Executive Forum (tuition) that is made possible by a former student.
Continuing Education Credits North Carolina State University, the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America, PGA of America, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the Golf Management Institute of Canada issue continuing education units or credits for successful attendance at the National Institute of Golf Management. It is an excellent way to meet professional certification requirements, as there are more than twenty contact hours at each year of the Institute.
